THE BATTLEGROUND OF KNOWING OUR TRUE SELF

Man is made up of the “spirit”, the “soul” and the “body”. The spirit is a supernatural being, often but not exclusively without physical form. The soul is the essence of a person usually thought to consist of one’s thoughts and personality; often believed to live on after the person’s death. The soul is made up of the “mind”, the “will” and the “emotions”. The mind is subdivided into two parts, the conscious and the subconscious mind. The will, is the part where you take decisions, which is the ability to be able to exercise one’s choice or intention. The emotions, is the person’s internal state of being and involuntary physiological response to situations, more of like the way we feel, either good or bad.

WHY DO WE NEED TO GUARD OUR HEARTS?

Let’s take a look at what the Bible says in Proverbs 4: 20-23, it says “My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” We’re advised to guide our thoughts, because it’s from there our physical attitudes towards certain things comes from. You’ll become what your heart is.

HOW DO WE GUIDE MY HEARTS?

  • The heart is where our “hope” of certain things is placed; hope is like the energy in our body placed in our soul. If you want to kill a man, just taking away his hope is enough to kill him. Anyone who loses hope in something important to him/her is likely to be at the edge of committing suicide. Therefore it’s necessary and important that we guide our heart in every way possible.
  • We also guide our heart by identifying our weak points and working towards it in order to bring forth a positive result. Moses in the Bible, didn’t get to the promise land because his anger, which is weak point, didn’t allow him obey what commanded him to do. King Solomon and Samson weaknesses are women; they can’t get themselves whenever they see anyone on skirt. Some people is drinking, others food, others lying. Let’s see what the Bible advises us about our weaknesses in Hebrews 12: 1-2, which says “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
  • We need to be aware that we all have the power to control our hearts. If you don’t believe you can do something, you will never try, and you will never know how far you would have gone. Believe in yourself. Psalms 139:14 says “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.” 2Timothy 1:7 says “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” And lastly, Psalms 27:13 says “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”

PRAYER: Oh Heavenly Father, guide me accordingly. Shape me and mold me into a better person. As I draw near to You, may I understand Your teachings and apply them to my life.
